Barn Plans

Consider a Barn Shed for Your Storage Needs

While there are several basic shed plan options available there is one style that seems to curry tremendous favor. That is the Barn Shed. What makes a barn shed so unique that it is sought out? It is the design of the roof itself. A barn shed gets its name from looking like and reminding one of the atypical old farm barns. Only smaller, a lot smaller. The basic structure is still four walls with a roof and a door.

The roof is composed of four sections that give the structure its namesake appearance. This allows for a shorter wall height while maintaining maximum headroom. The door is usually made from two sliding sections that move away from each other on a single end of the structure. This type of storage unit can most often be found in an environment where a large access entry is required for equipment such as a riding lawnmower or a snow blower.

Barn sheds, even in the small homeowner yard, can be a very attractive addition. Some of the concerns to be considered when choosing barn shed plans are the size of the structure relative to wall height as well as width and length. The entry door will never be larger than the height of the side walls so barn sheds with six-foot sidewalls will only support a five foot high door (there is an allowance for the roof overhang to take into consideration).

Barn shed plans vary all over the place. Some are very complicated while others are straight forward and simple to construct. Your individual level of expertise and skill should be the determiner if you choose to DIY. Almost any plan would be satisfactory for the professional builder. I say almost because not all plans are equal. The ones for barn sheds on this site will support a multitude of skill set levels.

Barn shed plans and barn plans create a structure that has both eye appeal and the look of nostalgia. Often painted red to simulate those found in the country the barn shed has the floor space and head room of a much larger storage building while utilizing the smallest footprint possible. If small size with sufficient head room is important to you in your selection of an outdoor storage unit then you should really consider the barn style shed.

As far a construction goes the main complicated feature is the roof assembly. All of the rest of the structure follows basic shed construction of floor, walls and a door. Because of the particular style and shape of a barn shed roof there are some special construction techniques that need to be employed. Barn shed roofs may have over lapping rafters in the simplest of designs and complex miter butt joints with gussets in the more complicated manner. Either way construction is not beyond the typical DIY’er who has a minimal understanding of construction practices so choose the style that best reflects your skills and abilities.
